What is the average cross country run? ›

In the United States, college men typically compete on 8 km (5.0 mi) or 10 km (6.2 mi) courses, while college women race for 5 km (3.1 mi) or 6 km (3.7 mi). High school students typically race on 3 mi (4.8 km) or 5 km (3.1 mi) courses.

General Eligibility

All Open athletes must be U.S. citizens 16 years of age or older on the day of the competition and must be current members of USATF in good standing.

The cross-country course is approximately two and three quarter to four miles (6 km) long, comprising some twenty-four to thirty-six fixed and solid obstacles. Obstacles usually are built to look "natural" (out of logs, for instance), however odd materials and decorations may be added to test the horse's bravery.

A good rule of thumb when determining tempo pace is to make it 30 seconds per mile slower than your 5K pace. So, if you run seven-minute miles in the 5K, tempo pace should be around 7:30 per mile. Working this energy system can take many forms. Some runners like steady tempos of three to five miles.

What is a harrier in cross country? ›

Cross country runners are referred to as harriers. Men and women of all ages compete in cross country, which, in the United States, usually takes place during fall.

The races are run by age group and gender. 8 and under run a 2k, 9-10 and 11-12 run 3K and Youth/Intermediate 13-14 and 15-16 run a 4k. The order of races is from youngest to oldest, girls first then boys.

International classes are identified by the class code CCI followed by the star level from 1* which is at 105cm level up to 5* which is the highest level for the most advanced horses and riders.
